The early bird gets the worm — push it down, watch it pop up.

The Wooden Early Bird Pop Up is one of those simple, perfectly designed toys that toddlers find completely irresistible. The board is illustrated with a sweet early bird character, and four rounded pegs designed to look like garden worms sit in the holes. Children push each peg down — then watch them all pop right back up, ready to be pushed down again. The satisfying surprise of the pop never gets old, and at 18 months it's exactly the right kind of cause-and-effect challenge.

It's part of Mentari's woodland-bird family of toys, alongside the Woodland Hammer Toy and the Stacking Tree with Bird — together they make a lovely first-birthday gift set in the Toddler Bundle.

At $20.99 with chunky construction and a clear, engaging mechanic, it's also one of the best-value toys in Mentari's 18 months+ range and a brilliant choice for a first birthday.

This toy is good simple fun. The spring up design works well, and actually responds better to a gentle touch, so handy for teaching my son about 'gentle hands'. Its mostly made of wood, which gives it a really solid feel to it. Everything is really well finished and decorated, so rough edges and gives the impression of really high quality. Would be a perfect gift for a 1 year old, or older.

This is a simple toy that will definitely help hand and eye coordination. It is simply made but there are no splinters or sharp edges. The colours look a little bit washed out. I'm not sure how well they will stand the test of time.Getting the pegs in is satisfying and seeing them pop up when you press them down and release adds some longevity to the toy. This is a pleasant enough toy with some physical learning benefits but it does seem a little bit expensive. I suspect you are paying a premium for the sustainable credentials. This is good for very young children but older ones will tire of it before too long.

Product cane with only 3 of the 4 “worms” unfortunately. Otherwise my child loves this

My 1yo is obsessed with this. It is easily his favorite toy. It’s such a simple concept but he loves the popping and it’s great fine motor practice. It doesn’t always pop very well, I do wish it was a bit more vigorous (especially since it’s a bit pricy), but he definitely enjoys it!
