Product Care & Safety

Are our products safe?

All our products meet international toy safety standards, including EN71, ASTM, and AS/NZS ISO. Our toys carry the CE mark and are tested to the highest standards to ensure they are safe for your child.

How do I clean and care for my wooden toys?

Wood is a natural material that requires gentle care. For daily cleaning, wipe with a damp cloth. For deep cleaning, use a 1:1 mixture of water and white vinegar. Please never soak wooden toys in water. For more details, please refer to our Product Care & Safety Guide.

Why does my toy look slightly different from the photos?

Each of our toys is handcrafted from natural wood. Because wood is a living material, variations in grain, color, and minor knots are normal. These unique details are natural characteristics of the timber, making every piece one-of-a-kind.

Are Mentari toys ASTM certified?

Yes. All Mentari wooden toys are tested to and comply with ASTM F963, the mandatory US toy safety standard. They also meet EN71 (European) and AS/NZS ISO (Australian/New Zealand) standards, and carry the CE mark. You can find safety information on each individual product page.

Are the paints and finishes on Mentari toys non-toxic?

Yes. All paints, stains, and finishes used on Mentari toys are non-toxic and child-safe. They are tested as part of our ASTM F963 and EN71 compliance process. We use water-based paints wherever possible and never use lead-based or solvent-based finishes.

What age are Mentari toys suitable for?

Age recommendations vary by product and are shown on every product page and on the packaging. As a general guide, our range starts from birth with sensory toys, through to age 5+ for more complex games and construction sets. Browse by age using our By Age navigation or see our Best Sellers for the most popular products across all ages.

Sustainability & Materials

Where are your products made?

All our products are made in our factory in Indonesia. Our manufacturing process—drying of the wood, cutting, and painting—is all undertaken at the same location.

We have been awarded the ICTI seal of approval and strive to maintain ethically high standards throughout our organisation.

What is SVLK Rubberwood and why do you use it?

SVLK (Indonesian Legal Wood) ensures that our timber is harvested from sustainable sources, fully compliant with international environmental regulations. We use Rubberwood because it is a “by-product” of the latex industry—once the trees stop producing sap, they are repurposed into toys instead of being burned.

Is your packaging eco-friendly?

Yes, we are committed to reducing plastic.
We use recycled materials for our packaging and wrap most of our products in cardboard and paper.

Do our toys have FSC certification?

Our Toys: Crafted from SVLK-certified upcycled rubberwood and FSC plywood. By repurposing trees at the end of their latex-producing life, we prevent carbon emissions and follow a circular model: for every tree used, a new one is planted.

Our Packaging: All boxes are FSC-certified, ensuring paper originates from responsibly managed forests. We prioritize resource upcycling to ensure our products are as kind to the planet as they are safe for your child.

Are Mentari toys plastic-free?

The toys themselves are made from rubberwood and FSC-certified plywood — no plastic. Our packaging is also plastic-free, using recycled cardboard and paper. A small number of products include cords or elastic components which may contain non-wood materials, but the primary toy construction is always wood.

Do you have a wholesale program?

Yes. Mentari products are available wholesale through Faire. If you're a retailer interested in stocking Mentari toys, you can apply directly through our Faire storefront.

About Our Toys

Are Mentari toys Montessori?

Mentari toys are designed in alignment with Montessori and Waldorf play principles — open-ended, hands-on, and free from batteries, screens, and electronic sounds. While Mentari is not a formally certified Montessori brand, our range of stacking and sorting toys, early learning sets, and pretend play collections are all designed to support independent, child-led play in the Montessori tradition.

Are wooden toys better than plastic toys?

Wooden toys are durable, sustainable, and free from the electronic stimulation that many experts believe can overstimulate young children. They tend to be more open-ended — a wooden block can be anything, while a plastic toy with buttons and sounds directs play in a specific direction. Mentari wooden toys are also made from a sustainable material (rubberwood) and are built to last for years, making them better value over time and better for the environment. That said, the best toy is always the one your child plays with most — wooden or otherwise.

What developmental skills do Mentari toys support?

Our range covers all key areas of early childhood development. You can browse by developmental skill using our Expert Picks navigation — including Fine Motor Skills, Gross Motor & Movement, Cognitive & Problem Solving, Language & Numbers, Social & Emotional, Imagination & Creativity, and Sensory Play.

What is the best Mentari toy for a 1 year old?

For a first birthday, we recommend exploring our 1 Year+ collection which is curated specifically for this age. Popular choices include the Woodland Hammer Toy, Happy Stacking Forest, and the 18 Months Garden Playtime Set. For more ideas, browse our Gifts for Toddlers guide.

What is the best Mentari toy for a 2 year old?

At 2 years old, children are ready for more complex pretend play, stacking challenges, and basic sorting. Popular choices for this age include the Wooden Toy Mobile Phone, Wooden Toy Telephone, Happy Stacking Ocean, and anything from our Kitchens & Markets collection. Browse our full 2 Years+ range for all options.

Do Mentari toys require batteries?

No. Every Mentari toy is screen-free and battery-free. We believe the best play is driven by a child's imagination, not a speaker or a screen. No charging, no batteries to replace, no volume buttons for parents to find.
